Did you know that raisins, grapes, chocolate, and macadamia nuts – delights we often enjoy – can cause severe poisoning in our beloved dogs and cats?
During the holiday season, when these delicious and healthy treats are frequently consumed by us, the number of severe pet poisoning cases rises significantly.
The highest risk occurs in small breeds due to their lower body mass relative to the amount of toxic substance ingested.
Research has yet to identify the exact compound in grapes and raisins responsible for poisoning. However, it has been established that as little as 2.8g of raisins and 19.6g of grapes per 1kg of a dog’s body weight can trigger symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, weakness, and acute kidney failure, which can even result in death.
Symptoms can appear as early as 24 hours after ingestion but may take several days to manifest.
Remember, never give grapes or raisins to your pets. Instead, opt for healthy treats and natural chews to avoid many unpleasant and dangerous situations.
And what do you think—are 2.8g of raisins a lot?
No, it’s just about 9 medium-sized raisins…
